<p>When traveling to a country for the first time I often like to get a taste of it as a whole. Then go back and dig deeper in certain areas during another visit. After spending most of our time inland in Morocco, we wanted to explore some coastal cities. Essaouira is a perfect Marrakech day trip option. It&#8217;s about a 2.5 hour drive and is a nice escape from the busy chaos of Marrakech. It&#8217;s a lot more chill and shops were more at ease about getting you to buy stuff.</p>

<h2>Marrakech Day Trip to Essaouira</h2>
<p>Essaouira is a port city, with beautiful ancient buildings accented with colors of blue and gold. The medina is surrounded by fortified walls and is easy to walk through. It&#8217;s also listed as a <a href="https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/753" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Unesco World Heritage site</a>. During the summer it gets quite crowded here as Moroccans like to escape to the coast for a break from the heat. There&#8217;s quite a cool and beachy resort vibe to this city, with the weathered buildings and smell of sea salt in the air. Our visit here was in the spring, so we were able to escape the crowds for the most part.</p>
<h3>How to Book</h3>
<p>I had booked this Marrakech day trip through <a href="http://www.riadorangeraie.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Riad l&#8217;Orangeraie</a>, our home for a few days in Marrakech. Our driver picked us up around 9am at the other riad we stayed the night before. Along the way we saw a beautiful landscape of argan trees and got lucky to see the famous tree-climbing goats in one of the trees. There was also a farmer there holding baby goats for tourists to take pictures with for a small fee. If you want a better chance of spotting these goats, the best time is spring and early summer. We snapped a few pics of this amazing experience and headed on our way again.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re not staying at this riad, you can easily book a day trip <a href="https://www.getyourguide.com/marrakech-l208/day-trip-essaouira-from-morocco-t56046/?partner_id=SWCG6ZS&#038;utm_medium=online_publisher&#038;utm_source=hola%40ourtravelsoup.com&#038;placement=content-middle" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a>. This option is a guided tour taking you to several main sites within Essaouira, and also allowing you to explore on your own. The transport is by minibus, but the cost is much more affordable.</p>

<h3>Lunch</h3>
<p>We arrived in Essaouira hungry so we stopped at Le Chalet de la Plage for some fresh seafood. It was also situated right on the beach with gorgeous views. The fish was so fresh and perfectly grilled. Convenient and great location, although next time we&#8217;d love to try some other spots. </p>

<h3>The Port and Ramparts, Moulay El Hassan Square</h3>
<p>After a light lunch we walked over to the port and ramparts with the picturesque blue boats. The port is so majestic with an incredible perspective of the city and its livelihood. We lucked out with a perfectly sunny day with clear skies. For a small fee you can go up and explore the ramparts and get nice birds eye views of the city and port. We highly recommend taking the time to explore this area.</p>
<p>On our walk to the main village, Terra came across a few kittens on the street. She couldn&#8217;t resist playing and petting them. We also came across a street vendor who was selling Berber flutes. My husband is a music lover, so we grabbed a souvenir. Near the port there&#8217;s several places with freshly caught seafood offering to grill it. Going by the smells in the air, I imagine it&#8217;s delicious and recommend trying one of these places as an alternative to a restaurant.</p>

<h3>Exploring the Medina and Souks</h3>
<p>For the rest of our time in Essaouira we walked around to explore. The village itself is not that big and you can cover a big portion of it within a few hours. The medina is pleasant to walk through and the buildings have so much ancient character. The colors are reminiscent of a seaside town with weathered buildings and beachy tones.</p>

<p>While exploring Terra asked for some fresh juice. We found a cute little gem of a shop with various fresh squeeze juice concoctions and smoothies. An older woman owned the shop and made a custom smoothie for Terra with such love and care. It was as if she was welcoming us into her home. If you&#8217;re in the mood for a little refreshment during your walk you should definitely make a visit here.</p>

<h3>Essaouira is a Must See!</h3>
<p>Essaouira just took my breath away, in the same way that Chefchaouen did. It had such charm and was pleasantly laid-back. It felt like such a nice escape from Marrakech, almost like a mini-vacation. The shops were more reasonable and less aggressive, so I definitely recommend picking up a few souvenirs here. I would have loved to spend a night here to explore more, but even a day trip is such a treat. If you&#8217;re trying to choose a Marrakech day trip, Essaouira is definitely a great choice!</p>

<p>As I planned our family trip, I knew that doing a Morocco desert tour was a must-have experience to cross off our bucket list. Our daughter cried the first time she rode on a pony, so I was a bit worried that she would do the same on the camel. But she ended up absolutely loving it! And she still talks about it months after the trip. So if you&#8217;re on the fence about bringing your kids on a Sahara Desert camel tour, I hope this inspires you! They&#8217;ll love riding on the camel and dancing in the dunes at sunset.</p>

<h2>How to Book a Morocco Desert Tour</h2>
<p>I booked the trip as part of our Morocco family adventure. We used <a href="https://www.marrakech-camel-trips.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Marrakech Camel Trips</a> company and it was a wonderful experience. The 3 day tour was a means to get from Fes to Marrakech, which worked out perfectly for our <a href="https://www.ourtravelsoup.com/best-of-morocco-10-day-family-trip/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Morocco 10 day itinerary</a>. It also allowed us to see unique parts of the landscape and small villages throughout the country. I chose the luxury option and our package included an overnight stay at a luxury camp and the Dades Valley with breakfast and dinner included. We also had a private driver in a comfortable SUV for all 3 days. Total cost was around $900 for all of us.</p>

<h2>Arrival at Merzouga</h2>
<p>The drive leaves from Fes around 8am, and heads to Erg Chebbi on the first day. On the way you&#8217;ll drive through the Middle Atlas mountains and watch the landscape gradually change to desert. Upon arrival in Merzouga, you&#8217;ll take a slight break and then head to the dunes around 5pm. As we arrived there was a slight sandstorm, so be prepared for unpredictable weather. The camel guide will help wrap your turban and get you situated on the camel. Our guide Said was very enthusiastic and stopped to take several photos of us. Along the way he also talked about local life in his village nearby, which was very insightful.</p>

<h2>Camel Trek</h2>
<p>It takes about an hour by camel to get to the camp. Between us we rode two camels and Terra sat with one of us. We covered her face with a turban during the worst parts of the sandstorm. It was quite an adventure having sand whipped at your face and eerie sounds of wind echoing through the desert. Our daughter handled it quite well and enjoyed being on the camel. She was amazed by the colors of the sand, however not too fond of the carob beetles crawling in the sand.</p>
<p>Shortly after we arrived, checked out our tent and got settled the sun was setting over the dunes. We climbed up the largest dune and sat there amazed, it was just absolutely dreamy. There&#8217;s nothing like watching a Sahara sunset, and I&#8217;m thankful to have witnessed it.</p>

<h2>The Luxury Camp</h2>
<p>The tents are situated between the largest dunes and are nicely equipped. They come with a very comfortable bed and private bathroom attached. Along the tents were cozy poufs and pillows to relax in. At night the Moroccan lanterns were all lit up and you can see every star in the sky. It was quite a magical experience!</p>

<h3>Dinner</h3>
<p>All of the camel guides will cook a traditional Berber meal, which consisted of a beef and chicken tagine, some roasted peppers filled with grains, soup and fruit salad for dessert. The food was very different from what we had eaten so far, more simple in taste and very hearty. Everything was so fresh and delicious!</p>
<div data-sliderid="75976" id="penci-post-gallery__75976" class="penci-post-gallery-container justified column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/sahara-desert-dinner.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="All veggies and grains entree during dinner"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/sahara-desert-dinner.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Sahara desert dinner" title="Sahara desert dinner"><div class="caption">All veggies and grains entree during dinner</div></a><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/sahara-dinner-tent.jpg?fit=750%2C563&ssl=1" data-cap="The main tent where food was served"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/sahara-dinner-tent.jpg?fit=585%2C439&ssl=1" alt="Sahara desert camp dinner tent" title="Sahara main tent"><div class="caption">The main tent where food was served</div></a></div>
<h3>Music</h3>
<p>After dinner everyone gathered around for some tribal music. The sounds of the drums echoed amongst the quiet dunes. Terra danced to the music and even got to play the drums at the end! Your kids will love the energy and excitement of this experience. Afterwards we ran and danced barefoot around the sand on top of one of the dunes. The moon was so big and bright, I&#8217;ll never forget it.</p>

<h3><strong>Leisure Time</strong></h3>
<p>There&#8217;s a table situated on one of the dunes a bit isolated from the camp. Our guide, Said, made some mint tea and we all sat together and just watched the stars. He also played with Terra, it was amazing to see her interact with someone from across the world. He told us a bit about his family and life living in a small village in the Sahara. It was one of those moments that makes travel the most rich experience you can ever have.</p>

<h3>Sunrise at the Camp</h3>
<p>If you want to see the sunrise over the dunes you&#8217;ll have to wake up early the next day. Breakfast is served in the main tent, and then it&#8217;ll be time to pack and take the camel trip back to meet your driver. Since we had a long drive ahead, we had to leave the camp around 8:30am.</p>

<p>If you have more time in Morocco, we highly recommend extending this tour for another night to spend more time in the dunes. There&#8217;s also an option to stay in a nomad camp as well, where you&#8217;ll see more into the local culture of the Sahara. Spending time on a Morocco desert tour away from civilization and unplugged is a cleansing experience. You&#8217;ll open your eyes to a completely different way of life. Small villages working together and thriving with just the basic necessities of life in a harsh environment. In these moments, nothing else really matters except staring out into the beauty of the vast desert landscape.</p>

<p>Chefchaouen, aka the Blue City Morocco is one of those unreal fairytale cities. You merely see it on travel sites and dream of going one day. Well we made that dream come true, and brought our daughter along too! We spent just one day in <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/chefchaouen-morocco-blue-city" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chefchaouen</a> with a day trip from Fes as part of our <a href="https://www.ourtravelsoup.com/best-of-morocco-10-day-family-trip/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">10 day Morocco adventure</a>. Our daughter was in such awe over this city and refers to it as the &#8220;Princess city.&#8221; It definitely really felt that way the whole time. There was something to discover in every little alleyway and nook.</p>

<h2>One Day in Blue City Morocco</h2>
<p class="textbox2"><strong>In This Article</strong><br />
<a href="#mustsee">How to Get Here</a><br />
<a href="#why">Why is the City Blue?</a><br />
<a href="#stay">Where to Stay</a><br />
<a href="#guide">What to Do in One Day</a></p>
<h2>Blue City Morocco: How to Get Here</h2>
<p>We booked an excursion with a private driver and were left to explore this magical utopia on our own. Since we were lucky to be there during low season we were able to capture the city with less people around. Our tour included round trip transportation, and some guidance on where to go. It was nice to have freedom to choose what we wanted to see.</p>
<p>There is also <a href="https://www.getyourguide.com/fes-l829/from-fez-day-tour-to-the-blue-town-of-chefchaouen-t199615/?partner_id=SWCG6ZS&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;utm_source=hola%40ourtravelsoup.com&amp;placement=content-middle" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">this tour</a> in a private minivan, and cheaper than what we paid through Fez Guide. You can also take public transit by bus here, which is the cheapest way. But the downfall to that is staying to a strict timetable, or you&#8217;ll be stranded within the city with no way back!</p>
<p>As you enter the city you&#8217;ll come across a viewpoint, which shows a panorama of the whole city. It&#8217;s the perfect place to get a glimpse of the city with the Rif Mountains behind.</p>
<div data-sliderid="73834" id="penci-post-gallery__73834" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry grid column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry grid"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-view.jpg?fit=500%2C750&ssl=1" data-cap="A peek of the Rif mountains through the buildings"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:78.00000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-view.jpg?resize=500%2C390&ssl=1" alt="A peek of the Rif mountains through the buildings" title="Chefchaouen view"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry grid"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-textiles.jpg?fit=500%2C750&ssl=1" data-cap="Gorgeous colorful carpets hanging everywhere"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:78.00000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-textiles.jpg?resize=500%2C390&ssl=1" alt="Carpets hanging in Chefchaouen, Morocco" title="Chafchaouen carpets"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry grid"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-sun.jpg?fit=500%2C750&ssl=1" data-cap="Sunlight peeking through the buildings"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:78.00000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-sun.jpg?resize=500%2C390&ssl=1" alt="Sunlight peeking through blue buildings of Chefchaouen" title="Chefchaoen sun"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry grid"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-steps.jpg?fit=500%2C700&ssl=1" data-cap="Stopped for a pic on the famous steps"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:78.00000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-steps.jpg?resize=500%2C390&ssl=1" alt="Famous photoworthy stairs in Chefchaouen with colorful pots" title="Chefchaouen steps"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h2>Why is the City Blue?</h2>
<p>Many people ask if the city is really this blue. It truly is a masterpiece of all different shades of blue. You will be literally asking yourself, &#8220;Is this real life?&#8221; I can&#8217;t believe people live here on a daily basis.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re wondering why the city is blue there&#8217;s several theories going around. To represent water, keep the mosquitos away, stay cool, spiritual reasons, protection from evil, the list goes on. But the city really is as blue as the pictures show, and even better in person.</p>
<h2>Where to Stay in Chefchaouen</h2>
<p>Although we only came here on a day trip, next time we&#8217;d love to stay the night. We researched places to stay and here&#8217;s a few that we recommend:</p>
<p><a href="https://agoda.tp.st/8jBCDGr7" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Résidence Hoteliére Chez Aziz</a>: A beautiful restored hotel in an excellent location. A nice value with great reviews!</p>
<p><a href="https://trip.tp.st/Iov5jbQ8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Riad Hicham</a>: We had lunch here and it was delicious! The riad itself looked beautiful and in an excellent location near the main center of town.</p>
<div data-sliderid="74499" id="penci-post-gallery__74499" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-stairway.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Blue stairway to heaven"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-stairway.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Blue stairway to a door in Chefchaouen" title="Chefchaouen stairway"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-shops.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Shops full of color and texture"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-shops.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Colorful shops in Chefchaouen" title="Chefchaouen shops"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-rugs.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="A dead end full of delight"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-rugs.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="A dead end with shops in Chefchaouen" title="Chefchaouen dead end"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-pots.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="An alley full of blue potted plants"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-pots.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Chefchaouen alleyway full of blue potted plants" title="An alley full of pots"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h2>Blue City Morocco: What to Do in One Day</h2>
<p>Chefchaouen is really the type of place that is best explored with no plan. We merely just walked around admiring the beauty of the streets. With just a day trip here you may feel a bit rushed, but you can definitely get a taste of it. With an overnight stay you can really take it slow and see a lot more.</p>
<h3>Lunch</h3>
<p>We had lunch at Restaurant Hicham located within Riad Hicham. It was recommended by our guide and although delicious, the service was quite slow, so plan ahead for it. If you&#8217;d like to save some time, grab a light meal at a cafe or some snacks in the main square.</p>
<div data-sliderid="81711" id="penci-post-gallery__81711" class="penci-post-gallery-container justified column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-dyes.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="The most colorful alley you&#039;ll ever see"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-dyes.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="An alley full of dyes and textiles in Chefchaouen" title="Chefchaouen dyes"><div class="caption">The most colorful alley you'll ever see</div></a><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-clothes.jpg?fit=700%2C525&ssl=1" data-cap="Clothes and bags hanging against the blue"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-clothes.jpg?fit=585%2C439&ssl=1" alt="Textiles hanging against blue buildings of Chefchaouen" title="Chefchaouen clothes"><div class="caption">Clothes and bags hanging against the blue</div></a></div>
<h3>Shopping in the Medina</h3>
<p>As we walked around we came across a lot of colorful shops. We noticed a lot of textiles and dyes lining the streets. Grabbing a few souvenirs is a great way to bring home some memories from here. There were a lot of woven items, bags, and scarves. We also noticed a lot of cats around, sitting on doorsteps, and wandering the alleyways. They made for some wonderful photos!</p>
<div data-sliderid="83754" id="penci-post-gallery__83754" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-cats.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Cats and magic carpets"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-cats.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Cats sitting on warm colored carpets in the Chefchaouen streets" title="Chefchaouen cats"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-alleyway.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="A blue alleyway leading to more blue?"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-alleyway.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Chefchaouen blue alleyway" title="Chefchaouen blue alley"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h3>Plaza Uta el-Hammam, Grand Mosque, and Kasbah Fortress</h3>
<p>Plaza Uta el-Hammam is the heart of the city and also the main square. There are a lot of cafes, shops, and street performers which makes it the most lively area here. You can also see the Grand Mosque and Kasbah Fortress nearby, however you have to be Muslim to go inside the mosque. The Kasbah offers wonderful views from the tower, but we decided not to go up due to lack of time.</p>
<h3>Ras el-Maa Waterfall</h3>
<p>Ras el-Maa waterfall is in the northeastern part of the city. It&#8217;s not too impressive, however you can watch the local women washing their clothes here. It&#8217;s a nice break from all the streets. </p>
<div data-sliderid="7367" id="penci-post-gallery__7367" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-arch.jpg?fit=500%2C750&ssl=1" data-cap="Walking through blue arches"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:150.00000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-arch.jpg?fit=500%2C750&ssl=1" alt="Walking through arches of blue buildings in Chefchaoen" title="Chefchaouen arch"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-alley.jpg?fit=500%2C750&ssl=1" data-cap="Walking through a dark alley leading to the light"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:150.00000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/chefchaouen-alley.jpg?fit=500%2C750&ssl=1" alt="A dark alley leading to a bright street in Chefchaouen" title="Chefchaouen tunnel"></div></a></div></div></div>
<p>As you can see, The Blue City, Morocco is quite the charming place. You can spend days just wandering the pure beauty of these streets. If you have the time to go, definitely don&#8217;t hesitate. It&#8217;s worth at least a day trip.</p>
<p><strong>Is the Blue City on your bucket list? If so leave a comment!</strong></p>
<p>Show us some love and pin for later!</p>

<p>You&#8217;re planning a trip to Morocco, but you&#8217;re wondering what cities to see. You have limited time there so you can&#8217;t see them all. You&#8217;ve heard of Fes, but you&#8217;re not as familiar as you are with the more widely known city of Marrakech. Fes or Fez, is an ancient 8th century city in the northern part of Morocco, about 3.5 hours by train from Casablanca. It consists of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fes_el_Bali" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Fes el Bali</a> (old city), and Fes el Jdid (new city.) If you&#8217;re wondering what areas to see in Morocco, here&#8217;s 9 photos and reasons why you should visit Fes Medina.</p>
<p><em>Note: We use affiliate links in this post. This helps us to continue providing great content. For more info you can read our full disclosure <a href="https://www.ourtravelsoup.com/affiliate-disclosure/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a>. </em></p>
<h2>Why You Should Visit Fes, Medina</h2>
<p>During our Morocco visit, we stayed two nights in Fes. One of those days we did a day trip excursion to <a href="https://www.ourtravelsoup.com/24-photos-one-day-in-chefchaouen-morocco/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Chefchaouen aka the Blue City</a>, so we really only spent one day in Fes. Since it&#8217;s easy to get lost in the winding maze of the medina, we booked a private guided tour through our riad, Le Jardin des Biehn located within the medina. Alternatively, you can also book a tour <a href="https://www.getyourguide.com/fes-l829/fez-medina-4-hour-guided-tour-t75985/?partner_id=SWCG6ZS&#038;utm_medium=online_publisher&#038;utm_source=hola%40ourtravelsoup.com&#038;placement=content-middle" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a> for up to 5 people. This will take you through the medina, souks and a tannery. </p>
<p>Our guide took us through Fes el Bali aka the Old City, so I cannot speak as much for the New City. He explained the history and background of the area and emphasized how it&#8217;s one of the largest car-free cities in the world. The Medina of Fez is also listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, and it&#8217;s easy to see why. </p>

<h3>1. A Winding Maze of Delight</h3>
<p>Walking through the Fes medina is an easy way to get lost. There&#8217;s plenty of sights, smells and sounds to fill your senses. The shops here are generally more laid-back compared to Marrakech. </p>
<div id="attachment_1244" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1244" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-architecture.jpg?resize=500%2C667&#038;ssl=1" alt="Moorish style tile work on a door in Fes medina" width="500" height="667" class="size-full wp-image-1244" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-architecture.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-architecture.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-architecture.jpg?resize=380%2C507&amp;ssl=1 380w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-architecture.jpg?resize=247%2C330&amp;ssl=1 247w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-architecture.jpg?resize=278%2C371&amp;ssl=1 278w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-1244" class="wp-caption-text">Closeup of tile work on one of the doors in Fes medina</p></div>
<h3>2. Stunning Architecture</h3>
<p>The Moorish influence seen all over the buildings in Fes is a reason alone to visit. The tile and detail on the woodwork is incredible. Every corner you turn will be another photo opportunity. </p>
<div id="attachment_1247" style="width: 710px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1247" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-tannery.jpg?resize=700%2C525&#038;ssl=1" alt="A view of a tannery in Fes from above" width="700" height="525" class="size-full wp-image-1247" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-tannery.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-tannery.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-tannery.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-tannery.jpg?resize=141%2C106&amp;ssl=1 141w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-tannery.jpg?resize=380%2C285&amp;ssl=1 380w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/fes-tannery.jpg?resize=247%2C186&amp;ssl=1 247w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /><p id="caption-attachment-1247" class="wp-caption-text">A view of a tannery in Fes from above</p></div>
<h3>3. For a Tannery Experience</h3>
<p>Fes is famous for its leather, and visiting a tannery is a great experience to see how it&#8217;s made. During the process the hides are soaked in vats of water and pigeon poop, giving off a distinct smell. This is why you&#8217;ll be given mint to hold to your nose while taking a tour. There&#8217;s also vats with natural dyes such as saffron, mint, indigo, that show a lovely array of colors. You can get a bird&#8217;s eye view by visiting a leather shop and ask for a tour while also grabbing a few souvenirs. This is an experience not to be missed! </p>
<div id="attachment_1249" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1249" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-university.jpg?resize=500%2C667&#038;ssl=1" alt="Looking into the University of Al-Karaouine from the outside" width="500" height="667" class="size-full wp-image-1249" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-university.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-university.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-university.jpg?resize=380%2C507&amp;ssl=1 380w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-university.jpg?resize=247%2C330&amp;ssl=1 247w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-university.jpg?resize=278%2C371&amp;ssl=1 278w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-1249" class="wp-caption-text">Looking into the University of Al-Karaouine from the outside</p></div>
<h3>4. University of Al-Karaouine</h3>
<p>Visit the oldest currently operating university in the world, and also marvel at its beautiful architecture. Unless you are muslim you won&#8217;t be able to go inside, but you can view it from the outside from a few open entrances. </p>
<div id="attachment_1250" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1250" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-carpets.jpg?resize=500%2C667&#038;ssl=1" alt="Inside the carpet shop in Fes" width="500" height="667" class="size-full wp-image-1250" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-carpets.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-carpets.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-carpets.jpg?resize=380%2C507&amp;ssl=1 380w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-carpets.jpg?resize=247%2C330&amp;ssl=1 247w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-carpets.jpg?resize=278%2C371&amp;ssl=1 278w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-1250" class="wp-caption-text">Inside the carpet shop in Fes</p></div>
<h3>5. Carpet Shop: Bring Home a Story to Tell</h3>
<p>Visiting a carpet shop is a must-have experience, although be careful of scams. We were brought to a grand-looking place by our guide and were urged by the staff to buy 10 various carpets for the mind-boggling cost of $20,000 USD. They threw carpets at our feet, and served us refreshments like butlers. Then they said we could sell the carpets at an art auction in New York for triple since they were made by hand and one-of-a-kind. I however didn&#8217;t buy into it, and in the end only ended up getting one carpet for a very good price with my &#8220;Berber&#8221; style bargaining. We will definitely always remember this experience and have an exotic carpet in our place to relive it! </p>
<div id="attachment_1252" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1252" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-doors.jpg?resize=500%2C667&#038;ssl=1" alt="Door in old medina of Fes" width="500" height="667" class="size-full wp-image-1252" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-doors.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-doors.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-doors.jpg?resize=380%2C507&amp;ssl=1 380w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-doors.jpg?resize=247%2C330&amp;ssl=1 247w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-doors.jpg?resize=278%2C371&amp;ssl=1 278w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-1252" class="wp-caption-text">Door in old medina of Fes</p></div>
<h3>6. The Doors</h3>
<p>I found myself taking photos of a lot of doors throughout Morocco. Fes is no exception to beautiful doors, and with the Moorish details and colorful tiles they are even more special.</p>
<div id="attachment_1253" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1253" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-moulay.jpg?resize=500%2C667&#038;ssl=1" alt="Peeking inside Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II" width="500" height="667" class="size-full wp-image-1253" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-moulay.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-moulay.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-moulay.jpg?resize=380%2C507&amp;ssl=1 380w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-moulay.jpg?resize=247%2C330&amp;ssl=1 247w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-moulay.jpg?resize=278%2C371&amp;ssl=1 278w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-1253" class="wp-caption-text">Peeking inside Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II</p></div>
<h3>7. Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II</h3>
<p>Another must-see architectural wonder in Fes medina. Have a peek inside and you&#8217;ll see the familiar gorgeous and detailed tile work as seen throughout the old city. It contains the tomb of Idris II, however only muslims are allowed inside. </p>
<div id="attachment_1255" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1255" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-markets.jpg?resize=500%2C667&#038;ssl=1" alt="Walking through the markets at night in Fes medina" width="500" height="667" class="size-full wp-image-1255" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-markets.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-markets.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-markets.jpg?resize=380%2C507&amp;ssl=1 380w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-markets.jpg?resize=247%2C330&amp;ssl=1 247w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-markets.jpg?resize=278%2C371&amp;ssl=1 278w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-1255" class="wp-caption-text">Walking through the markets at night in Fes medina</p></div>
<h3>8. The Markets</h3>
<p>Walking through the markets is quite a unique experience with the sights, sounds and smells. See locals go about their daily lives. Observe all of the various shops with butchered meats, dried fruits, live chickens with eggs, and foods being prepared. Your nose will be filled with pungent smells of another world. We highly recommend a guide if you plan to go at night to not get lost.</p>
<div id="attachment_1256" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1256" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-ceramics.jpg?resize=500%2C667&#038;ssl=1" alt="Ceramics shop in Fes medina" width="500" height="667" class="size-full wp-image-1256" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-ceramics.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-ceramics.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-ceramics.jpg?resize=380%2C507&amp;ssl=1 380w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-ceramics.jpg?resize=247%2C330&amp;ssl=1 247w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/fes-ceramics.jpg?resize=278%2C371&amp;ssl=1 278w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-1256" class="wp-caption-text">Ceramics shop in Fes medina</p></div>
<h3>9. Ceramics</h3>
<p>Fes is a large center of producing pottery. The Fes distinct style has colorful geometric shapes. If you&#8217;re looking for souvenirs to bring back, you can visit a ceramics shop and buy here. We did see this pottery being sold all over Morocco, but I imagine it may be a bit cheaper here. </p>
<p>These are just a few reasons to visit Fes Medina. It&#8217;s definitely a must-see while you&#8217;re in Morocco. For ideas on trip planning, see how we fit it into our <a href="https://www.ourtravelsoup.com/best-of-morocco-10-day-family-trip/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">10 day Morocco guide</a>. </p>

<p>Marrakech is a vibrant city full of wonder and delight. While planning our family trip to Morocco, I was often left wondering what to plan for her to have fun as well. Would she run and get lost in the maze of the medina? What if she doesn&#8217;t eat any of the food? In the end she had a blast and still remembers her time here. If you&#8217;re on the fence about bringing your little ones along, here&#8217;s some ideas on what to do in Marrakech with a toddler.</p>

<h2>Things to Do in Marrakech with Your Little Ones</h2>
<h3>Hire a Guide</h3>
<p>Having a guide show you the way through Marrakech will help you to see more sites. Maximizing time while with your kids is always ideal. It helps you to get familiar with the city on your first day there, making further exploration easier. The guide can also help get the best deal on souvenirs within the souks. Best of all, your kids may even make a new friend (Terra did!) We booked our guide <a href="https://www.marrakechguidedtours.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">here</a>.</p>
<div data-sliderid="74889" id="penci-post-gallery__74889" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-guide-2.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Following our guide through the winding maze of Marrakech"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-guide-2.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Following our guide through the winding maze of Marrakech" title="Marrakech guide"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-guide.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Making friends with the guide"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-guide.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Toddler and Moroccan guide posing for a picture" title="Marrakech guide with toddler"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h3>Explore a Derb</h3>
<p>A derb is a small alleyway of residences in the medina. It&#8217;s a quiet contrast from the main areas. This one in particular was in the Jewish Quarter, and the doors were incredibly ornate and all unique. Your little ones will enjoy following the narrow maze to see what&#8217;s at the other end.</p>
<div id="attachment_1386" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1386" class="size-full wp-image-1386" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-derb.jpg?resize=500%2C667&#038;ssl=1" alt="Toddler exploring the doors in a derb in Marrakech" width="500" height="667" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-derb.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-derb.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-derb.jpg?resize=380%2C507&amp;ssl=1 380w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-derb.jpg?resize=247%2C330&amp;ssl=1 247w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-derb.jpg?resize=278%2C371&amp;ssl=1 278w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-1386" class="wp-caption-text">Exploring the doors in a derb</p></div>
<h3>Capture Memories</h3>
<p>It&#8217;s always nice to look back on your memories later. Terra loves looking at our travel pics long after the trip. Pose for some family pics in front of some of the sites, or take some of your little one as you explore Marrakech.</p>
<div data-sliderid="47922" id="penci-post-gallery__47922" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-pose-2.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Terra posing in front of an interesting building"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-pose-2.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Toddler posing in front of rose colored building in Marrakech" title="Marrakech pose"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrekech-pose.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Family photo in front of Koutoubia Mosque"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrekech-pose.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Family photo in front of Koutoubia Mosque" title="Koutoubia Mosque"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h3>Head to Dar el Bacha</h3>
<p>Dar el Bacha was recently opened to the public in early 2018. It features stunning geometric zellige tiles and carved cedar wood all throughout. You can explore some of the rooms and there&#8217;s a small museum with featured exhibits. In the center is a lush garden with a fountain. It&#8217;s a great open space to let kids roam and explore. Terra loved discovering what was in each room and even thought she might find a princess there. It also seemed to be less touristy here than Bahia Palace, so it&#8217;s a hidden gem.</p>
<div data-sliderid="27614" id="penci-post-gallery__27614" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/dar-el-bacha-3.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="She thought she could find a princess here"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/dar-el-bacha-3.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Toddler walking through door of Dar el Bacha" title="Dar el Bacha door"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-dar-el-bacha.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Walking along the garden"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-dar-el-bacha.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Toddler walking along the garden of Dar el Bacha" title="Dar el Bacha garden"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h3>Explore the Souks</h3>
<p>Walking through the souks is a wonderful sensory experience for kids. They&#8217;ll love seeing all the shops and will enjoy joining in on the shopping experience. There&#8217;s so much to smell, see and even taste. A lot of the shops we bought from also gave Terra a free gift, and she felt so special. She even made a new friend with a shopkeeper we bought a tea set from. They&#8217;ll be constantly entertained just by strolling through the different parts of the souks. You can explore on your own, or book a guided tour <a href="https://www.getyourguide.com/marrakech-l208/marrakech-3-hour-colorful-souks-tour-t296415/?partner_id=SWCG6ZS&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;utm_source=hola%40ourtravelsoup.com&amp;placement=content-middle" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</a>. Having a guide was so helpful for us when haggling prices! Terra slept so well after a long day of shopping!</p>
<div data-sliderid="23372" id="penci-post-gallery__23372" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-3" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-souks-4.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Passing by the lantern section"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-souks-4.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Moroccan lanterns within the souks of the medina" title="Marrakech lanterns"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-spices.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Spice shop within the outdoor markets"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-spices.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Spice shop within the outdoor markets of the souks" title="Marrakech spices"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-shopkeeper.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Making friends with a friendly shopkeeper"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-shopkeeper.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Toddler and shopkeeper in Marrakech Morocco" title="Marrakech shopkeeper"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h3>Check out Jardin Majorelle</h3>
<p><a href="http://jardinmajorelle.com/ang/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Jardin Majorelle</a> is a wonderful place to let your kids explore. There are many various plants and flowers, a koi fish pond, and a larger pond by the main building. Terra loved exploring the paths and discovering all of the plant life featured here. There&#8217;s also a cafe located on the premise with decent food at a reasonable price. Overall it&#8217;s a great nature experience featuring unique plants, beautiful colors, and the best backdrop for capturing family memories.</p>
<div data-sliderid="95039" id="penci-post-gallery__95039" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/majorelle-3.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Posing in front of a colorful door by the building"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/majorelle-3.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Toddler posing by a door at Jardin Majorelle" title="Jardin Majorelle Door"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/majorelle-2.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Terra loved the pond at Jardin Majorelle"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/majorelle-2.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Toddler looking at pond at Jardin Majorelle in Morocco" title="Jardin Majorelle pond"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h3>Discover the Local Animals</h3>
<p>As you explore the medina of Marrakech you&#8217;ll come across several animals. Your kids will of course love seeing them. Terra was constantly spotting cats and chasing them around the winding alleys. She was also fascinated by the monkey and chameleons located by the markets and Jemaa el-Fnaa square. You&#8217;ll also see a lot of donkeys carrying items in the streets, Terra loved them!</p>
<div data-sliderid="46592" id="penci-post-gallery__46592" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-cats.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="She spotted some cats within the fondouk"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-cats.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Toddler chasing cat in souk of Marrakech" title="Marrakech Cats in Souk"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-chameleon.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Chameleon on the street by the outdoor spice markets"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-chameleon.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Chameleon on the street by the outdoor spice markets of Marrakech" title="Marrakech chameleon"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h3>Visit Le Jardin Secret</h3>
<p>Gardens are always a great place to take kids. They love exploring nature and being surrounded by a serene environment. Le Jardin Secret is a little oasis amongst the busy medina. It&#8217;s located in the Mouassine district and conveniently close to the souks. You can also learn about the fascinating history of how it was restored from an ancient riad to the beautiful garden it is today. There are two different gardens to explore and a cafe on the terrace with a birds eye view.</p>
<div data-sliderid="1877" id="penci-post-gallery__1877" class="penci-post-gallery-container masonry column-2" data-height="300" data-margin="3"><div class="inner-gallery-masonry-container"><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/le-jardin-secret.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Running around the Islamic garden fountain at Le Jardin Secret"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/le-jardin-secret.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Toddler roaming around Le Jardin Secret in Marrakech" title="Le Jardin Secret"></div></a></div><div class="item-gallery-masonry"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-link-relative" href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-jardin-secret.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" data-cap="Exotic garden at Le Jardin Secret"><div class="inner-item-masonry-gallery"><span class="penci-isotope-padding" style="padding-bottom:133.40000000%;"></span><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ourtravelsoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/marrakech-jardin-secret.jpg?fit=500%2C667&ssl=1" alt="Exotic garden at Le Jardin Secret" title="Le Jardin Secret"></div></a></div></div></div>
<h3>Go for a View over Jemaa el-Fnaa</h3>
<p>After our guided tour we had some time to kill before dinner. Our guide and a family we had befriended at the riad highly recommended that we take on a nice view over Jemaa el-Fnaa square. We went to Le Grand Balcon Cafe Glacier which had a balcony over the main area. You&#8217;re required to buy at least one drink per adult and they were a bit overpriced, but worth the experience. Although it was crowded we still managed to see it during sunset. Your kids will love watching all the performers from above and you can freely take pictures without being hassled to pay. Afterwards you can walk around the square and grab a bite to eat. If you want to have a guide to lead the way you can book a <a href="https://www.getyourguide.com/marrakech-l208/marrakech-jemaa-el-fnaa-medina-private-tour-at-night-t296420/?partner_id=SWCG6ZS&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;utm_source=hola%40ourtravelsoup.com&amp;placement=content-middle" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">night tour here</a>.</p>

<p>Morocco is a country filled with unforgotten sights, smells and sounds. It is one of those special places that has left a permanent mark on us. Our daughter still brings up the camels, the cats roaming the streets, the sand and the orange juice (it&#8217;s seriously the best!)</p>
<p>In this 10 day itinerary you&#8217;ll explore the best of Morocco including coastal cities of Casablanca and Essaouira, the ancient medina of Fes, the incredible colorful city of Chefchaouen, a 3-day desert tour with driving through the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, Todgha Gorge, Dades Valley, and ending in the magical city of Marrakech.</p>

<h2>When to Go to Morocco</h2>
<p>The best time to travel to Morocco depends on what type of experience you want, but we find that Spring (March-May) or Fall (September-November) is most ideal. Our particular trip was end of March through early April and we found it to be much less crowded then. Weather was also perfect, never too hot or too cold which made walking around and our time in the desert tolerable.</p>
<p>For a rich and unique experience, going during Ramadan might interest you. This is typically during May and early June. According to locals, summer is quite hot and it&#8217;s hard to do much. So this means end of June through August isn&#8217;t the best time to go. If you do happen to go during this time consider visiting the coastal cities instead. Moroccans usually flock to these areas for relief from the heat.</p>
<h2><strong>What to Pack for Morocco</strong></h2>
<h3><strong>Backpacks</strong></h3>
<p>We like to travel as light as possible to avoid checking baggage, so we bought a backpack that is compact and can still fit a large amount of stuff. <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06X193ZB4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B06X193ZB4&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=travelsoup1-20&amp;linkId=4ef02138944de7eef5e90d4671bbd806" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Osprey Porter 30</a> is our go-to for traveling light, and this size is guaranteed to be accepted as a carry-on. It fit almost all of our clothes, aside from a few items. We love how it opens just like a suitcase, so there&#8217;s no inconvenience of trying to pry stuff from the bottom. There are also straps that snap around your waist for better support and it&#8217;s super comfortable to wear. I have back issues and still did ok with this. We used it along with our regular backpack for all three of us during this trip.</p>
<h3><strong>Sandals and Comfy Sneakers</strong></h3>
<p>I switched between these the entire trip. Sandals are highly recommended for the desert if you want to avoid getting sand stuck in your shoes. I made this mistake and still have bits of the Sahara in my sneakers. These <a href="https://amzn.to/2OzaDHw" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Superga sneakers</a> are so comfy and I walked for hours in them. For sandals I always love my Birkenstocks.</p>
<h3><strong>Clothing Layers</strong></h3>
<p>The weather in Morocco fluctuates from morning to night. Depending on when you&#8217;re there, during the day can be hot, and then at night fairly chilly. So I made sure to pack layers of clothes like t-shirts and cardigans, along with a light jacket.</p>
<h3><strong>Kimono and Scarf</strong></h3>
<p>As I woman I wanted to be respectful of the culture, so I packed a scarf and kimono to cover my shoulders. It went perfectly with my attire and also fit in well with the vibe.</p>
<h3><strong>Medicine</strong></h3>
<p>Meds are a must-have for those worst case scenarios. This includes Tylenol, cold medicine, cough drops and any stomach meds. I also pack <a href="https://amzn.to/2SXBSii" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">activated charcoal</a> in case of food sickness and electrolytes to help keep hydrated and healthy. As a fail-safe, I also bring a prescription of antibiotics just to have. If you&#8217;re traveling with kids, pack the same for them as well.</p>
<h3><strong>Sunblock/Sunglasses</strong></h3>
<p>The sun gets quite strong at times, so having both of these will help with that.</p>
<h3><strong>Snacks</strong></h3>
<p>During the desert tour you may be driving for long periods without stopping, so packing some snacks will help curb any hunger.</p>
<h3><strong>Pocket-Wifi</strong></h3>
<p>We didn&#8217;t find wifi to be available much in Morocco except for hotels and it was quite slow. We&#8217;re glad we rented a pocket wifi to help stay connected with our friends and family. We rented ours from <a href="https://www.tepwireless.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tep Wireless</a> and had a great experience.</p>
<h2>Is Morocco Kid-Friendly?</h2>
<p>Is it safe to bring kids to Morocco? The answer is yes! We were pleasantly surprised by how kid-friendly Morocco is. There were always available food options anywhere we ate. The locals adored our daughter and she received gifts from some of the shop owners. We weren&#8217;t as pressured to buy stuff in the souks. She was showered with attention everywhere we went, I think she must have felt like a princess the whole time. Cats were everywhere roaming the streets, she was in heaven! And the best part is, these are memories she will never forget for years to come.</p>
<p>So if you&#8217;re wondering how to spend ten days in Morocco with kids, you&#8217;ve come to the right place! This itinerary was created DIY style to suit our taste and desire to see more of the country. There&#8217;s a mix of both economical and splurge options, however it can easily be altered to your budget and personal style as well.</p>
<h2><strong>Day 1: Casablanca</strong></h2>
<p>Our flight had us arriving in Casablanca in the evening. Instead of siteseeing, we opted for just dinner and early sleep to get a great start the next day. If you arrive in the morning we recommend to check out the <em>Hassan II Mosque</em>, we did not see it this trip, but it was highly recommended by locals.</p>
<h3><strong>Where to Stay</strong></h3>
<p>For lodging we kept it budget and simple since Casablanca was just a means to enter and exit Morocco. We stayed at <a href="https://agoda.tp.st/RHTwAKok" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hotel Les Saisons</a>. The room itself was very basic, but it provided what we needed for the night. The location was conveniently close to the Casa Port station which connects to Casa Voyageurs, the main hub to travel elsewhere in Morocco.</p>

<h3><strong>Dinner:</strong></h3>
<p>Nearby the hotel was <a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g293732-d6369264-Reviews-Casa_Jose-Casablanca_Grand_Casablanca_Region.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Casa Jose</a>, a lively and delicious option for dinner. We had the paella and a few tapas, all of which did not disappoint. Cost of dinner was around $50 for all 3 of us, including wine. There was music and a mix of locals and tourists, an overall nice and relaxing introduction to Morocco after a long flight.</p>
